Laszlo Nagy Székesfehérvár, 1981 march 3.
My name is László Nagy and I was born on the 3rd of March 1981 in Székesfehérvár, Hungary.
Thanks to my parents, the sports world has traditionally been very important in my family. They clearly contributed to what I have become today: an elite athlete. My father was a professional basketball player, and my mother always played sports as a hobby. A year after my birth, we moved to the city of Szeged, where my brother Levente was born; he is now an actual handball goalkeeper.
In the first steps of my sports career, I was a basketball player, and as a teenager I represented my country in the Hungarian youth national team. I started practicing handball when I was in High School in a local community tournament, and apparently I draw the attention of professional coaches who were there talent-spotting.
Handball immediately hooked me up, so I decided to join the training sessions of Pick Szeged’s junior team. At first, I continued practicing two sports -basketball and handball, so I kept being simultaneously called up by both Hugarian Junior National teams.
When I was sixteeen years old, as a basketball player I was offered a sports scholarship in New York, but I declined it in favor of handball, so from this point I fully committed to become an elite player. By the end of that same season, I joined Pick Szeged’s senior handball team.
After playing two seasons in the Hungarian league, I received very good news: F.C. Barcelona was interested in signing me, so I was very happy and had no doubts I wanted to join “Barça”. Their main Head Coach at the time was Valero Rivera, and he came all the way to Budapest to meet me in person and discuss about our future agreement. When we then shook hands, I committed to an 8-year contract to make my dream come true. In August 2000, once all the contractual details were in place, I flew to Barcelona. My new club mates welcomed me with open arms and made my integration process very smooth, for what I still remain extremely grateful.
Other than playing sports, throughout my career I continued studying and completed my first degree at University of “Juhász Gyula Tanárképzô Fôiskola”. Later on, I got a second diploma in International Marketing Management at “Kodolányi János Fôiskola” University.
My wife Erika and I got married on the 25th of June 2005 and two years later, on the 20th of June 2007, our daughter Debora was born.
After twelve fantastic seasons with F.C. Barcelona and primarily due to personal reasons, in the summer of 2012 I decided to start a new adventure at MKB Vezsprém KC back in Hungary, where I hope to win many championships with my new handball club.
